10 Minutes with SmartBoating Dock Manager Steve Conry
Some of the best times I had on the water were as a child...
I grew up in little Manly. We had on a house on the beach - our back stairs were sand!
Me and my siblings spent idyllic childhood days playing on Quarantine beach and in the North Head national park.
My friend had a laser and I had a windsurfer so we spent hours we messing around on the harbour dodging the Manly Ferry. Those were the days before mobile phones - so Mum hung out a towel when it was time to come home.
Each day I caught the ferry to North Sydney Boys High School in Moore Park. In those days the ferry was the Scottish built the South Steyne - now a restaurant at Darling Harbour (see the photo below).
My father and brother raced 16ft skiffs on the harbour but I was more into rowing. I rowed 8s at Abbotsford on the Parramatta river.
I guess I've always had a sense of adventure and I spent much of my adult life travelling and working all over the world. And now I've come full circle and headed back to the best place in the world - Sydney's Northern Beaches.
I spent some time back on Sydney Harbour working as a Bridge Climb guide and on the Aquashell floating stage and the firework barges. Then in 2009 I joined the SmartBoating team. I love working in such a beautiful environment and messing around with boats once again.
I'm married to Yvonne and feel blessed to have 2 gorgeous young children, Grace born in Feb 2008 and Jack born in June 2010.
